Footnotes

Create Footnotes

Footnote Cycle

Modify the number format of the selected cell to show a superscripted footnote to the right of the cell's contents. Repeat the keystroke to increment the footnote number or remove the footnote once the maximum footnote value (9) is reached. Specific footnotes can be applied directly, without cycling, from the Macabacus > Format > Footnotes menu. Unlike Footnote Toggle, which uses font formatting to implement footnotes, Footnote Cycle uses number formatting.

Footnote Toggle

Use the Toggle Footnotes shortcut (or menu button) to quickly superscript numbers at the end of cell text, making them appear as footnotes. Repeat the operation to remove superscripting.

Macabacus recognizes footnotes with or without a single space between the last letter in the cell text and the trailing number (e.g., "Other items 2," "Other expense 4"), footnotes encapsulated in square brackets and parenthesis (e.g., "(2)," "[3]") at the end of cell text, and multiple footnotes (e.g., "(2)(3)," "2,3").

When applying superscript formatting natively, Excel may automatically adjust row heights, which can be annoying. Macabacus keeps row height constant when using this tool. Unlike Footnote Cycle, which uses number formatting to implement footnotes, Footnote Toggle uses font formatting.

Footnote Visibility

Hide Footnotes

This tool hides footnotes at the end of cell text by changing the font color of the superscripted text to match the fill color of the cell containing the text. The footnote is not actually removed, just hidden. For example, suppose you have added footnotes to your model, but the explanatory text to which the footnotes refer appears on your PowerPoint slide, rather than in your model. If you want to print out your model for review without pasting it into PowerPoint, you can hide the footnotes which do not refer to explanatory text. Access this tool from the Macabacus > Format > Footnotes menu.

Show Footnotes

Show footnotes after hiding them by changing the font color of the superscripted text to the font color of the first character in the containing cell. Access this tool from the Macabacus > Format > Footnotes menu.

Check Footnotes

Footnote Checker

Footnote Checker verifies that footnotes appear in sequential order, such that no numbers are skipped, and also checks the relative positioning of footnotes to ensure that lower numbered footnotes (e.g., 1, 2) appear in top left cells and larger numbered footnotes (e.g., 8, 9) appear in bottom right cells. Access this tool from the Macabacus > Format > Footnotes menu.

You can perform this check on the currently selected range or on all print areas in the active workbook. When you perform this check on all print areas, each print area is inspected individually, so that footnotes in one print area are not compared to footnotes in another print area. You can also specify whether footnotes should be ordered from left to right, then top to bottom, or vice versa.

This tool checks only those footnotes implemented using font superscript formatting (e.g., Footnote Toggle), not those implemented using number formats (e.g., Footnote Cycle). Also, Macabacus cannot check footnotes in textboxes overlaid on the spreadsheet as they are not part of cell text.
